Most adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) do not know they have it — with many missing the opportunity to avoid irreversible loss of kidney function and ultimately kidney failure.

On March 13, we hosted a webinar on this serious issue. Keesha Dixon, advisory board president for the Central Indiana senior Fund, provided an overview of the Central Indiana Senior Fund, its goals, and the State of Aging in Central Indiana report.

Dr. Oluwafisayo Adebiyi, IU Health, a nephrologist in Indianapolis with expertise in treating chronic kidney disease, heart failure, hypertension, among other conditions, described what CKD is, how to discover if you have CKD, and how you can avoid this silent killer.

To further underscore the importance of CKD awareness, Karen Frederickson Comer, Associate Director and Director of Collaborative Research and Community Health Informatics, The Polis Center, presented findings on how common CKD is in Central Indiana from a new research brief from the State of Aging in Central Indiana Report.

The program featured a panel discussion on how to discover whether you or your loved ones have CKD and how to maximize quality of life with the disease. Elizabeth Gabriel, Enterprise Health Reporter at WFYI and Side Effects Public Media, moderated a panel including Dr. Adebiyi, Cassy Erbeck, IU Health Renal Dietician, and Curtis Warfield, Indiana Donor Network kidney transplant recipient.
